The Investigation Medal

$

0

So, today a brand new medal was released to the Ingress Scanner. This medal is known as the Edgar Allan Wright Medal or the Investigation Medal.

edgar

This medal was created as the result of a collaboration between Dr. Edgar Allan Wright,  the founder of Operation Essex, and Verity Seke, the operator of the Niantic Project G+ Page.

In the announcement post, Jojo Stratton became the very first Investigator to earn the medal for her work with the “Word of the Day” series she continued after the Investigator Board shut down on Oct. 1st, 2013.

Jojo

From one Investigator to another, I’d like to congratulate Jojo for her incredible dedication.

Now, how to obtain this unique medal? Verity outlines some of the ways to receive it:

“This medal will be awarded to those who have gone above and beyond in helping the Niantic Investigation reach its maximum potential:

By digging tirelessly for the truth…
By working to mentor and educate others seeking to join the Investigation…
By being a bastion of creativity and commitment….
And by working to maintain the positive momentum and sentiment within the Investigative community.

This medal will be deployed by me slowly, a few each week, to those who myself and Dr. Wright agree are truly deserving.”

As to how to jump into the Investigation? Well, there are quite a ton of ways to get started.

I actually operate a series here at Fev Games, where every month I recap the current situation within the Investigation. It’s called the The Niantic Investigation Status Update series and you can find the newest update here.

Ingress Teardown – Bonus (Store Details)

Welcome back to an extended special teardown post. This week has been crazy with the launch of 1.83.5, which had enough details to warrant a Google Plus style teardown. We stumbled upon some details today that we had to share. We spotted, server side, an update which led us to believe another version is near.

This upcoming version: 1.84.0, as of right now, will have the Store enabled we talked about in 1.83.

So of course we took a peek to see what the Store will be selling. This data is not fake. Unlike other images shown around Google Plus where “fake” items were injected into the Store. These items were populated from Niantic’s servers themselves.

Wow. That was quite the mouthful. So I’ve written a tiny FAQ below.

FAQ

Q: What does CMU stand for?
A:
Chaotic Matter Unit

Q: What is the conversion from CMU -> some currency?
A: We have no idea.

Q: Is this real?
A:
As real as responses from Niantic servers get.

Q: So the Key Capsule has to be purchased?
A:
Well we are not entirely sure. There seems to be an avenue to purchase one, but it could still be available to hack at a very low rate. We simply don’t know.

Q: Fishfood? What?
A: The itemId of the “Key Locker” is “com.nianticlabs.ingress.key_locker.fishfood“. Not sure why they added fishfood to itemId.

Q: What items are being sold?
A: Not sure what items are contained in those packs.

It’s important to note that all of this data is being viewed before the public release of the Store. Things can change and we don’t completely understand how this will function in the ecosystem of Ingress.

Thanks a ton to Daniel Benton, whose post led us to check the servers for information this late at night :) and Dean Nielson for the featured image.

How to be untouchable By DannoReg

jedi

___

INTRODUCTION

What if I told you that you already have the tools required to be untouchable in ingress? It may seem a bold statement, but it’s true.

Regardless of who you are, your level, faction, your footprint, you will (or already have) run into someone who disagrees with your actions in the field. And despite your action being fair play by ingress scanners (i.e. the use of a virus), eventually someone will have something to say about it. They might be mad, serving you an array of negativity in comms. They might retaliate by fielding over your home as a show of force. Many of these types of agents are relentless in their desire to see you break. They will try to use your scanner against you. They will try to engage your emotional state to direct your gameplay. These actions know no bounds, regardless of TOS, and you can’t stop them. Quite often, no matter your response, the fact that you responded at all fuels the fire, and it burns you both. It’s a sad reality with very few solutions. But despite all the negativity you may be subject to, you can become instantly untouchable by making a small shift… in YOUR mindset.

THE TRUE SCANNER

What do you see when you look at your scanner? Do you see the face of your enemy? Or the product of their actions? The haters would love the former to be true. But it’s not. What you see is portal status. Ever changing, but true. True, it was an agent that flipped a portal, deployed mods, or initiated any other type of change to the playing field. But the bottom line is, it happened outside your control. As people, we are predisposed to assign our own reason for that action based on what that change was and who made it. This may lead to IRL confrontation because, why should you allow Agent X to continue engaging you and your portals in such a negative way? Here’s why:

DISREGARD THE INTENTION

Consider for a moment how a single person ARG works. The programming of the game is built in a way that challenges your skills, prevents your objectives, and constantly works against you in ways that you could not even imagine when you started started the game. You’re fighting an AI; Un-loving, all knowing, with the sole purpose of disabling your progress. It speaks with its actions, giving you an opportunity to test your skills in varying settings. And in this light, I suggest that Ingress is no different. When a portal gets flipped and fields go up, I don’t see my enemies working against me (even if it is out of retribution). I see the AI Working against my progress in the game. Without the agent, the intention doesn’t exist. All that is left is the newly changed playing field, and the opportunity to react in a way that benefits personal stats and the faction’s MU count.

You vs the AI

Here’s the good news. Every action in the game can produce an opportunity for you. I welcome action against my game, because in my mind I think of every action as a random AI providing me an opportunity. It modifies my terrain, and I use the new terrain to build on my objectives. When I battle, I don’t see the agent on the other end of the scanner. I see an AI that has been specifically programmed to prevent me from levelling by any means necessary. And that AI has LOTS of tools available to it.

  • Comm

Sometimes the AI tries to distract you by engaging your emotions with nasty comments in comm. It’s frustrating, and hits like a brick nearly every time. The AI has been programmed to know exactly what to say to trigger an agent. But your friends at Niantic have given you a tool to battle back. Block that $#!t! You may feel defensive, or even threatened now, but blocking now ensures that in the future that nasty AI will have no way to distract you again. It forces the AI to re-engage you on the scanner where they belong.

  • Dick move

Aggressive AI’s love this one. It’s their way of showing you that they want to have power over you. But the results are short term. Inevitably that portal will get wiped out, or upgraded. It still produces gear. It still supports fields. It may be a real lemon when you first see it, but it’s a perfect opportunity to make lemonade. If the AI gives you a L1 portal with full mod slots, you still have an opportunity for 40 deploys, 8+ links, and the satisfaction that the AI didn’t get you down. Lemonade.

  • Junk mods

The AI likes to stick it to ya by filling your mod slots with link amps. While this can be frustrating, It’s not the end of the world. It’s another temporary jab that hasn’t really done any long-term damage. When I see this, I consider it a sign that the AI is still watching and keeping me on my toes. What a great reminder to stay on your game! Take it as a compliment, your skills are high enough that the AI feels it necessary to focus on you.

  • Social alienation

The AI creeps into communities too. It tries to influence other agents to take social actions against you. It tries to vilify you to other agents, usually with screenshots, lack of context, and harsh opinions. Don’t give in. The AI cannot prevent you from maximizing your stats. And any agent that is so blinded by the AI’s control will not be able to see the merit of your gameplay. And the bottom line is, you don’t need those short minded agents on your side. As long as you stay honorable in your goals and actions, act within the game framework, and abide by the TOS, the AI cannot affect your progress with this method.

  • Guardian Hunts

Face it. The AI is programmed to hunt your guardian. You will lose at least 2 or 3 (or 20 or 30) guardians before you reach onyx, if you ever do. But don’t let that stop you from trying. This is a badge of persistence. And the AI is as persistent as you. The best kind of win in this goal is the one in which you lost several guardians in stride before finally reaching the top. An agent whose guardian is hunted is playing on hard mode. The pride you feel when you finally get there can only be undermined by your own reactions to the failures which happened before. Don’t let that happen. Be a guardian champion by knowing the AI is really, REALLY good at this game. Don’t give it the satisfaction of knowing it ruined your day. Rebuild, and move on, and soak up the glory that one day your persistence will pay off. It’s worth the pride you will earn in the end.

These are just a few examples of how you can switch your mindset to gaming against an AI instead of dishonorable agents with a bone to pick. The trick is to not engage back, and run straight for the opportunity it presents. It’s a method that can be applied universally across the field. The AI is there to destroy you. But it can never EVER stop you from levelling your game.

CONCLUSION

Yes, in reality Ingress is a social game. And being such, it is nearly impossible to escape the emotions and reactions of other agents. But I’ve found that by removing the human intention behind each change on the scanner, I’m able to head straight to a tactical decision about that action. And in doing so, I’m able to avoid all the human distractions that many of us suffer in the game.

It’s been said so many times… this is just a game. But in light of what I’ve learned through rising up the ranks, I would like to add one more thing to that.

This is a game of persistence. And you are the only agent that matters. Treat the AI and yourself with honor, and your success is guaranteed.

One last note, you will know when this shift in mindset has reached its peak. That moment comes when you are able to battle shoulder to shoulder with an agent and maintain a positive conversation about something non-ingress related. I like to think that is a trademark of an Ingress Jedi.

Stay positive out there Agents. The only way to win Ingress is to reach honor in the game. And in that pursuit, you can be untouchable.

Welcome to Part 2 of this series where we dive into the upcoming items of the store. Part 1 of this series can be found here. Today we noticed another change to graphics and items for the store.

So of course we took a peek to see if the items have changed. This data is 100% Genuine. Previously, there have been posts on Google+ where “filler” items were injected into the Store to give you an understanding of what may appear. These items, however,  were populated from Niantic’s servers themselves.

Ingress APK Teardown [1.85.1]

$

Welcome back everyone. Another surprise Sunday release hit us today. This is version 1.85.1 on Android, and is currently on a 1% roll out to a Play Store near you. Assuming no major errors, this version will reach a 100% roll out within a few days. Like prior posts, we can peek into this apk and figure out what is coming.

Key Capsule Locker

First discovered in the 1.83.1 teardown, this item has seen a lot of functionality tweaks/changes.

  • The item was renamed from “Key Capsule” to “Key Locker“.
  • You can store 100 Portal keys in a single Key Locker.
    • Yes, only portal keys.
    • Items in this locker do not count towards inventory limit.
  • You can only have 5 Key Lockers. Confirmed via string in the application and server side change.
  • You can buy 5 different color Key Lockers (gold, green, white, blue, red) in the store.
    • Not sure if Key Lockers will be obtainable outside of IAP (In App Purchase).
  • We will update this post when we have a render of this item.
<string name="ITEM_DESCRIPTION_KEY_CAPSULE">Store 100 Portal Keys outside Inventory limit. Limit of 5 per Agent.</string>

 Powerups

Also discovered initially in 1.83.1, we have more details on these new item(s).

  • Power up: Portal Fracker
    • Doubles Hack output for 10 minutes or 150 hacks, whichever comes first
    • Portal Fracker is more than likely per agent. So it only affects the agent who used the item, but this could change.
    • It appears this powerup might be per portal. So a Portal Powerup gets applied to a portal and lasts for 10 minutes or 150 hacks for just that portal, benefiting everyone who interacts with that portal.
    • <string name=”COMM_AP_MESSAGE_USING_A_PORTAL_POWERUP”>Gained %s AP for deploying a Portal Powerup</string>
    • There is a new UI class called fracked-portal-effect. So there will probably be a visual indicator while you have one active.
    • We will update this post when we have a render of this item.
  • Power up: Portal Beacon
    • Beacon above target power for 4 hours.
    • Comes in a variety of types
      • RES (Beacon – RES)
      • ENL (Beacon – ENL)
      • Niantic (Beacon – Niantic)
      • Meet (Beacon – Meetup)
      • Look (Beacon – Target)
      • Other (Beacon)
    • It appears this beacon icons will show up on scanner like a waypoint.
    • Unsure if this beacon can be placed by users or staff only.

beacon-e1445796777384

These beacons look like meeting points for both sides (Res/Enl) for events, drinks for a meet up (possibly 1st Saturday) and an NL1331 icon for presumably the NL1331 events.

Store

Also discovered in 1.83.1, the Store saw the biggest changes this version. The addition of the Billing Permission was added to the AndroidManifest.xml file. This means you will receive a prompt from the Google Play Store asking you to accept the new permission.

  • Inspecting the Play Store page shows this entry
    • $1.99 – $99.99 per item
    • Remember we saw the 200,000 CMU item in this post. Maybe that 200,000 CMU package is $99.99?
  • Strings were added for various Store operations
    • Synthesizing Chaotic Matter Item
    • Transferring Chaotic Matter
    • Approval needed for purchase, please check back later.
    • Not enough CMU, please obtain more.
    • Exchange %1$s CMU for %2$s?
  • Everything needed for the Store to function is present. This will probably be enabled server side after both platforms (iOS and Android) have this version and after a formal announcement.
  • A preview of the items for sale can be found here.

Extras

We have a new sound! These are always fun to listen to ahead of time.

sfx_hack_split

Conclusion

This version was built on October 17 and released on October 25. Interesting changes are on the horizon as this is the first major development application wise, we have seen since Niantic went independent. Thanks to Justin for the APK

Nerd Information

Niantic is learning. Some of our methods for obtaining information early is now just returning “ERROR: SERVER“. They have taken care to isolate data exposure to only those authenticated. I guess they might have been upset about the leaking of store details.

Additionally, the Terms of Service were updated on October 22. Mainly legal information about IAPs, but some interesting notes about disassembling APKs. Thanks to Jose Antonio Rey for letting us know about this.

Ingress “frakking”– Good or bad?

$

What is frakking and will it change the face of Ingress? Will our scanners overflow with gear? Let’s find out!

frakker_official
By now you’ve likely heard rumours of this new “frakker” thing!  If not, check out our latest teardown, and an official Ingress post on the topic!

But what is it exactly? Here’s what we believe so far: it’s a short term portal hack output doubler.  It will last for either 10 minutes or 150 hacks, and is applied to the portal and applies to all players. It will cost 2400 CMU (in-game currency) which equates to $1.20 to $1.91 USD depending on the block size that you purchase.  It’s rolling out today, and will be available soon in the brand new shiny store.

Will this ruin our beloved game? Will our recently expanded coffers (thanks to key lockers) be overflowing with abundant gear?  Let’s find out.

Traditional hacking output

Let’s start by looking at the most impacted use case – hacking a P8 portal.  Right now regular P8 hack averages ~3.1 items, and a perfect glyph adds ~9.4 items to that for a total of 12.5 items (~4x the output).  Where am I getting these numbers?  I’ve been collecting data, and I’ll have another post later this week which will explain in detail where these numbers came from.
glyph hack p8

Assuming that you’re spot-on with your hacking cycle, from hitting hack right as the timer elapses, to displaying the glyph, to entering the glyph, dismissing the results, and back to the main scanner screen takes roughly 25 seconds on average for a P8 glyph. Assuming that you have a VRHS in play, that needs to be added to the 90 second cooldown timer, so a single glyph hack cycle takes 115 seconds. To make the numbers easy, and assuming that you’re not always going to be exactly perfectly timed, let’s say two minutes per cycle.

But that’s two minutes for 4x the output, vs a non-glyph hack at 1.5 minutes for regular output. Over the same time period you’re getting triple the output by glyph hacking already. If you’re serious about getting inventory, you’re probably good at glyphing anyway.  If you’re not very good at it, take a look here for some tips!

Glyph hack killed the social Ingress star

social farming irony
Remember back when going for drinks with your Ingress friends actually meant spending time with them?  Pepperidge farm remembers.

Glyph hacking has drastically changed the social aspect of farming.  Before that, although you were still looking at your scanner, all you had to do was tap the “hack” button so you could actually socialize and talk with each other.

Although glyph hacking is fantastic for providing gear, it provided a fatal triple blow to social farming – not only do you need to farm less often and in smaller areas, but people also focus on their devices for glyphing the entire time.

For example: in the vast majority of locations, excluding perhaps the very rural ones, you will have at least one place where you have four portals where each one is within a ~30 second walking range. Assuming that you can glyph and walk at the same time, that gives a two minute walking cycle for all four VRHS’d portals which is perfectly timed to be constantly glyphing.  Add a VRMH on each portal (or two RMH, after all you usually don’t care how long the portals last for) and this gives you 16 hacks total.  Since there’s no waiting period after the last hack, you can burn out all four portals in 30 minutes.

Sixteen hacks each, with four portals is 64 hacks total.  Multiply that by 12.5 items each and that’s 800 items. With that you’re looking at roughly 300 R8 290 X8 60 R7 55 PC8 50 X7 20 CS 13 US8 5 RS 2 VRS and 10 other items (again, see my article later this week for how I came by that). Assuming you recycle the resonators, that’s net 440 useful items (or ~55% of the gross output). For most people, that’s about as much as you can handle before being at cap anyway. This will probably change with key lockers though, but then again we’re assuming you ONLY have four portals. Most places you will have a lot more than that to work with.

How do frakkers fit into this equation?

Since frakkers burn out after either 10 minutes, or 150 hacks, let’s assume that we want to use them in the case outlined above.  In 10 minutes we can get roughly 5 glyph hacks per person, so we’d need 30 people to get the most out of it.  That’s a lot of people.

For the moment, let’s assume that we don’t glyph hack, and can pop on an extra VRHS to bring our cycle time down to 59 seconds.  That means that we can get 10 hacks in 10 minutes, and we only need 15 people to get the maximum benefit.  With four frakkers on four portals (assuming we can walk-cycle them within 60 seconds total), 10 non-glyph hacks each will net us 4 * 2 * 10 * 3.1 = 248 items, or 136 useful items in 10 minutes.  Not too shabby!

But how does this compare to glyphing?

Four portals glyph hacked for 10 minutes (five glyphs each) will yield roughly 4 * 5 * 12.5 or 250 items, or 137 useful items.  Pretty much the same as not glyphing and using a frakker, plus we saved a VRHS. However we were able to talk to each other by frakking, so there is a bonus there.

why-not-both
That’s great, but what if we combined the two? Let’s frack and glyph.

Well we can calculate that pretty easily by just doubling the result – in 10 minutes we’ll get 274 useful items!

However if we’re gonna glyph, we might as well go for the full 30 minutes to make the most use out of our mods.

If we’re willing to use 3x the number of frakkers, we can get fully double the output, but we’ll likely have run out of inventory room long before this.

So let’s say that, for direct comparison, we use the same number of frakkers (four) and continue normal glyph hacking after they have worn off.

That means for 10 minutes (out of the 30) you get double output, or basically you get 40 minutes worth of hacking in 30 minutes. That’s a 1/3rd increase. Alternately if you only want the 440 useful items, you can stop after 20 minutes (but really, you’ve got the mods and portals, might as well stay the extra 10 minutes!) So you get an extra 145 useful items, assuming that you have cap space for it. But again, that’s assuming there were only four portals. If you added a fifth to the mix, you’ve just neutralized the usefulness of the frakkers for the cost of an extra VRHS and VRMH. However let’s still assume that isn’t the case.

What does this actually mean overall for the Ingress ecosystem?

Well we’ve already shown that if you’re only sticking around for 10 minutes, there’s no difference for 15 people regular hacking four portals using a total of 8*VRHS, 4*FRAK, and 4*CMH, vs glyph hacking using only 4*VRHS and 4*CMH.

If you frak ‘n glyph hack, you’ll get double the output, which basically means that you’ll save 10 minutes.  But let’s try to look at overall impact, and assume that we glyph hack and frack for a half an hour, and that all 15 people in our event have enough inventory space to hold 822 useful items.  The frakkers provided 411 of those, so that’s an ecosystem increase of 15 * 411 = 6,165 items vs doing the same without frakkers.  Let’s also say that your team is crazy dedicated, and you do this once a week, for an increase of 6,165 items per week.

But how many items are being hacked in your city on any given week?  Obviously no numbers like that are available, but we can probably take some ballpark guesstimates to get a feel for the impact.

If you have 15 people who are willing to do this once a week, that probably puts your community around about 500 active people.  Let’s also guess that the average number of useful items hacked per day per person is about 50, or 350 per week.  That means your community produces 175,000 useful items per week!

An increase of 6,165 items is a 3.5% increase.

That’s a pretty small impact for the worst case scenario that I’ve outlined, and it’s provided a decent revenue stream for Niantic.

We’ve made some pretty liberal guesses here, and assumed that your community is large, and super active in order to try to find a worse case scenario.  Most aren’t that active, and really if you had eight portals instead of four and spent 60 instead of 30 minutes, you’d get the same result. So really all we’ve done is save 15 people 30 minutes of hacking a week, at a cost of 12*FRAK but saved 4*VRHS and 8*RMH.

Will frakkers be useful at all?

Absolutely!  Although the worst case scenarios won’t really impact the game play that much, there are places where they will be helpful.

First off in severely rural areas where the portal density (and player density) isn’t available.  Having only a couple P8 portals around and being able to double your output in whatever time you’re able to spend will be locally very beneficial.

Another great benefit: let’s hope that this will actually bring back social farming.

What I’d like to see, is a return to the social filled pre-glyph days of farming events. Since we rarely actually need that many items, I suspect that at ~$1.50 each we won’t even think twice about frakking for the entire burnout cycle when doing a group event, and that means that you can get the same output by non-glyph hacking and talk to your friends at the same time.  All it’ll cost is a few more VRHS and a few dollars worth of frakkers spread out amongst all your attendees. Besides, what’s a few frakking dollars between friends?

Overall I think they will help the game, let us be more social again, and provide a nice non-intrusive revenue stream for Niantic, while not really being all that disruptive.

The Niantic Investigation: Oct. 2015 Status Update

Hello and welcome back to Fev Games as we continue our look into the Niantic Investigation for October 2015.

So what’s been going on? What do you need to know in order to jump in?
Well, the biggest things to happen this month are the first ever Flash Shard Anomalies in Boston, MA, Houston, TX, London, UK and Zurich, Switzerland.

These hyper-intensive events centered around the control of a specific researcher who was a part of the Niantic Project.

So far, the Enlightened have Yuri Alaric Nagassa on their side, whom they claimed in Boston:

YuriBoston

Meanwhile, the Resistance have dominated the conflict, controlling Misty Hannah in Houston, Enoch Dalby in Zurich and Carrie Campbell in London:

MistyHouston Enoch Dalby Carrie Campbell

The next researchers at stake are Oliver Lynton-Wolfe in Bangkok, Victor Kureze in Hamburg and Martin Schubert in New Orleans. More details can be found on the G+ page for IQTech Research: https://plus.google.com/u/0/108020987035258478791/posts/8ExwbpPsPvm

Outside of that, the two biggest talking point among Investigators this month revolves around a mysterious development from Susanna Moyer. Earlier in the month, she had gone offline and, as a result, Hank Johnson and Klue took over the Ingress Report in her place. When she re-emerged, she came with a revelation regarding Strategic Explorations, the subsidiary of Hulong.

“Strategic Explorations (SE), a black-lab research and intelligence group associated with Hulong Transglobal, has injected a new ‘Storefront’ into the Ingress Scanner. Intel suggests that this ‘Storefront’ will soon roll out to all Agent Scanners.

SE’s researchers appear to have stabilized Chaotic Matter to forge three new items: Key Lockers, Frackers and Beacons.  SE allegedly plans to offer containers of “Chaotic Matter Units” or CMUs for sale which can be used to obtain these new objects.

Here is what we know so far:

Portal Fracker: A Portal Fracker doubles the Hack Output for a specific portal for 10 Minutes or 150 hacks whichever happens first. All agents hacking the portal get this benefit.

Beacons: The Beacon utilizes frequency modulation to temporarily project holographic imagery above a Portal.  Agents can obtain various kinds of Beacons for several use cases.

Key Locker (limit 5 per Agent): The Key Locker is able to store Portal Keys in a shielded enclosure that prevents these items from impacting the Scanner Inventory limit.  Each Key Locker can hold up to 100 Portal Keys.

This is likely just the beginning of SE’s foray into Chaotic Matter development. Many more items are expected. Agents, even though these items may be tempting, you should be aware that Chaotic Matter is known to be dangerous.  It has been shown to cause mutations and has unknown effects on human physiology.. Should you choose to experiment with these new constructs, you do so at your own risk.”Ingress G+ debriefing.

The second major conversation happening right now revolves around a mysterious video that emerged. It was between Jahan and ADA. Yeah, turns out she wasn’t taken offline in August like we thought. Take a look for yourself:

So, that’s what has been happening in the world of Ingress in October. Abaddon has arrived…

Info on new items in Ingress – we will update this frequently, so check back often!

Here’s a quick little post highlighting the new stuff that has been happening with Ingress lately!

Quick links:

General Info

As a general note: all paid items are locked to your account.  You cannot add them to any capsule, or drop them (so you cannot give them away).  You cannot put them into MUFG capsules either.

Ingress Store

The store is currently live for 16% of the people (as of Nov 1 20:00 GMT).  There is no need to refresh or reload your scanner.  When it becomes available for you, you will see it immediately as a tab beside your Inventory tab.

The rollout has been random (percentages were 1, 2, 4, 10, 14, 15, 16) and no clear pattern as to when they have increased.  In other words, we have no idea when you will get it.

ingress store

In it you can buy Chaotic Matter Units (in-game currency) in the following block sizes (prices will change depending on local currency):

CMU USD CMU/USD Savings
2500 $1.99 1256
7000 $4.99 1403 10%
15000 $9.99 1502 16%
32000 $19.99 1601 22%
90000 $49.99 1800 30%
200000 $99.99 2000 37%

With that currency you can buy the in-game store items (currently frakkers, beacons and lockers):

High Price Low Price
CMU USD USD
1300 $1.03 $0.65 3 Beacons
2400 $1.91 $1.20 Frakker
3700 $2.95 $1.85 Locker
14900 $11.86 $7.45 5-Pack Locker

The high and low prices depend on the size of the CMU package that you buy.

Note that you can use Google Play credits, however you must have enough to cover the entire purchase price. You cannot, for example, use $8 in credit and pay $12 to get the 32k pack. If you live in the US you can add credits to your Google Play account prior to purchase to do this, however outside of the US you will have to buy a gift card (at a local store) to top up your account.  Please note that gift cards are country specific and cannot be used cross border.

Portal Frakkers

frakker_official

Portal Frakkers allow you temporarily double the output (10 minutes or 150 total hacks amongst all players).  It appears to actually act like a regular hack, but then double the output, with the exception of mods.  Those still double, but you may get a split by rarity (for example 3CS 1RS).  You always appear to get an even number of items looking at it this way, and you can get 2 keys at once with this as well.

When you hack, you get a cool sound and when the items pop-up in scanner they start coming up like normal, but then actually split in half:

portal frakker split visual

During frakking the portal glows in scanner for all players:

frakker animated

Frakkers are also displayed on intel.

frakker intel

When it ends the portal loses half its current resonator charge.

Frakkers respect normal hacking rules (burnout and cooldown), are deployed like a virus, any player can deploy on any portal, they apply to all players, only one can be deployed on a portal at a time, you get 500AP for deploying, and an announcement is made in COMM that you did so.

Portal frakkers stay on the portal even if the portal is destroyed or flipped.

Key Lockers

You can have 5 key lockers in your inventory (available in white, red, green, gold, and blue) and they hold up to 100 keys outside of your inventory space.  You can buy them individually or as a 5-pack at a discount (get 5 for the price of 4).

key locker red

You can add and remove keys like normal, even if you’re already at cap.  Effectively you can now have up to 2,500 items in inventory accessible all at once if you unloaded all of the capsules.  Note that they each require 1 inventory space.

Portal Beacons

beacon-e1445796777384

Portal Beacons are quite cheap, last 4 hours, and faintly spin above the portal.  They are purchased in packs of 3. There is no effect other than visual, and they are visible to all players.

portal beacon

Portal beacons will show up on intel.

beacons intel

And they will combine with frakkers to show both on intel:

frakker and res beacon

All beacon types (Resistance, Enlightened, Meetup, Target) are available to all players (Note the Niantic beacon type is not).

portal beacon inventory

Beacons are deployed like a virus, any player can deploy on any portal, only one can be deployed at a time, you get 500AP for deploying, and an announcement is made in COMM that you did so (except it erroneously says frakker).

Portal beacons stay on the portal even if destroyed or flipped.

Hack or Treat

HackorTreat

Haven’t been lucky enough to get access to the store yet?  Don’t fear!  For the weekend Niantic has decided to increase the output of XMP and US in addition to anything else.  This applies for regular as well as glyph hacks, and applies to both friendly and enemy hacks.  You can combine this with frakkers to get very high output (more than 45 items per hack on average).

frak halloween

The effect on glyphing seems to be about 2.5x regular output.  Unknown exactly how long this will last.

Ingress Store: what could be next and why?

Possible store strategies, why release what?

Niantic Labs has just recently announced their in-game store in Ingress.  The items they’re selling come from three different categories.  Here’s a short analysis of those categories.

Category 1: Individual benefit

Key capsules

“People have been talking for a long while about wanting keys or capsules not counting to their inventory limit, why not monetize on that idea?” – Niantic, probably

Key Lockers are a game changer for the individual but don’t really affect other players.  This tends to makes you happy but not upset the enemy too much.

There may not be too many options of this type, but I see this category as a potential success. I believe we’ll see more down the road, maybe the option to subscribe to extended inventory. What about 0.99$ for +500 item caps, per month?

Theoretical items:

Extended inventory

Labeled Capsules

Universal non-counted capsules

Category 2: Skins

Skins have always been the way to monetize which doesn’t affect gameplay.  Team Fortress 2 succeeded at that, but they have characters to place the skins on, which other players see as well.

Although this seems to be the least harmful way, it’s hard to make it a major income.  This is in part due to many people thinking “nah, I can live with how it is instead of paying for a skin”.

Beacons are more aimed at organisers currently.  A strategic move to promote more events in combination with their new web shop.

The new web shop might sell swag, such as the Abbadon kits.  If this is the case, more events = more money.

This category may be a success in the long term because it’s the area where they currently have a stable base of buyers and can reach the bigger mass that don’t want to buy on Internet.  If agents buy/order at an event instead, they can grow a new customer base. The beacons could even be used by local businesses as a way of advertisement.

Theoretical items:

Mission badge sorting

Custom medals

Light theme

Category 3: Pay to Win(p2w)

Frackers

Frackers are a brave move to the p2w side of the road.  Luckily it’s a light version of p2w as the effect, affects everyone and not just the buyer.  The impact on the game is also minor as you can read about here. Although people are very often against p2w in games when it’s introduced the highest voices tend to transform into the best spenders that buy the items more frequent than others (especially if the word “sale” is present). I believe this will be the biggest success of the three items actually, and will open up for items that only benefit the buyer once the players gets used to the fracker.

Possible items:

Instant Cooldown

Temporary freely placed portal

MegaStike

Summary

Niantic Labs needs money, as do all companies. Store is a definite choice as a game on this scale pretty much has to be free (imagine Ingress Lite…).  We all know that the best way to monetize on the mobile platform is the freemium model, and I believe they will work more on that and micro-transactions in Pokemon Go (who wouldn’t like a master ball?).  It is up to you to decide which way the store will head, if you don’t buy from one category they’ll lay energy on another.  So in one way, I believe this store is an experiment to see what the users want, or more specifically to see how to make the most money. I believe that we’ll see the most items in the pay to win section, but who knows for sure. We’ve just began wandering on this new path.

Abaddon Anomaly part 1

$
0
0

The Abaddon Anomaly kicked off last month with the Flash Shard events where the Enlightened won 1 city and the Resistance won 3, going into last weekend in the lead.

There are a few differences with how this series is being scored. Points are awarded in levels for Links and Fields and fields are worth 35% of the opposite team’s score

The weekend kicked off with the first anomaly Asia/Pacific with the enlightened winning all four of the cities by more than double the points each.

a1-total

In New Taipei City, the Enlightened managed to put up 152 links and 52 fields as well as a covering field over 3 of the measurements In Bangkok, the Enlightened earned 4 times as many points as the resistance by capturing a majority of the portals and fielding over all four measurements In Manila, the Enlightened managed to get the resistance down to only 10 points in the final measurement to win the city by more than 4 times the Resistance's points. In Sydney, despite their covering field coming down before the first measurement, the Enlightened went on to earn 305 points from links and fields instead of the 150 points they would have won otherwise.
A couple of hours after the first anomaly was completed, it was time for round two and the Resistance made a comeback, winning by more than double the points.

a2-total

In Hamburg, the Resistance flew ahead claiming top points for almost all measurements for links and fields Zagreb was tightly contested throughout the day with Resistance coming out on top by only 39 points The Enlightened took an early lead in Seville which was great enough that the Resistance's covering field and win of the last two measurements wasn't enough for them to come back. The Enlightened's 250 pts for fields is so high it distorted the rest of the graph so it has been cut down. While the Resistance owned more standard portals than the Enlightened, the ownership by the Enlightened of more volatile portals plus a covering field gave them a dominant end position.

The final anomaly this weekend was hotly contested; the Enlightened won the city points but the first shards this weekend were landed by the Resistance for them to steal the win for this round.

a3-total

The Resistance control of the Volatile portals wasn't enough to combat the Enlightened's points for links created and portals owned. The Enlightened managed to hold 61 links and 15 fields underneath Resistance fields at Measurements 1 and 3 Although the Enlightened had a field up over 3 of the measurements, the Resistance had control on the ground which took them to their win in Guatemala City Pittsburgh was a close one with both teams winning 2 measurements each but the Enlightened won the day by 105 points

Both teams were neck and neck on the first measurement of Septicycle 2015.43 but the Enlightened steamed ahead far enough that a Resistance checkpoint with more than 5 billion MU wasn’t enough to beat them.

The Resistance are currently in the lead with the all important Abaddon series points, 9 to 4 however the Enlightened are leading in the cumulative value by a tiny 88 points.

The Niantic Investigation: Nov. 2015 Status Update

$
0
0

Hello and welcome back to Fev Games as we continue our look into the Niantic Investigation for November 2015.

So what’s been going on? What do you need to know in order to jump in?
Well, the biggest things to happen this month were the Abaddon Anomalies in New Taipei City, Hamburg and New Orleans.

At stake in this round were the destinies of Dr. Oliver Lynton-Wolfe in New Taipei, Victor Kureze in Hamburg and Martin Schubert in New Orleans:

Fate

In New Taipei, the Enlightened succeeded in controlling Oliver Lynton-Wolfe, the creator of the Ingress Scanner. After the dust had settled, he had a message for the Global Enlightened.

“His message also seems to reveal what the Enlightened could hope to gain in Abaddon: To return the patterns of the researchers to human form. But what if they fail? Will they remain in the Portal Network… or something else?”

In Hamburg, the Resistance were victorious, controlling the pattern of Victor Kureze, the physicist who died in the Niantic Lab on April 21st, 2013. Investigator Klue was present on the ground, seeking a missing page of the Vision Journal of the deceased Carrie Campbell, the language expert who unraveled the Shaper Glyphs Language. After some time passed, we gained access to the full page:

“Unlike the other pages, this one does not seem to focus on a single Glyph. In addition, there seems to be a variety of colliding ideas. Some kind of map? A symbol of some kind? And what are the scrawled patterns on the right? Some analysts have suggested that Carrie’s explorations in this vision could have been what led her to Chicago during Operation Cassandra.”

You can see the full image and its discussion here: https://plus.google.com/+NianticProject/posts/SLEfoneYR1u

Hank Johnson and Susanna Moyer were present in New Orleans, where the Resistance controlled the pattern of Dr. Martin Schubert, the skeptic of Niantic who slowly became a believer after its end. Hank had been searching for pages of a missing manuscript by sensitive author Robert E. Howard. The manuscript was discovered to have been slightly altered by Howard’s colleague H.P Lovecraft.

You can see the full pages and its corresponding discussion here: https://plus.google.com/+NianticProject/posts/ZFzVsjAMAua

With the anomalies over, the Resistance are in the lead, with a total of 9 points vs the Enlightened’s 4.

Finally, Agents across the world assembled a mysterious story possibly written by the sensitive author Felicia Hajra-Lee, depicting what appears to be an attempt by Jahan to capture a powerful Prime Object. (Link 1: https://plus.google.com/+NianticProject/posts/NQYy4z77r1c, Link 2: https://plus.google.com/+NianticProject/posts/LeTL7x7L1bf)

So, that’s what has been happening in the world of Ingress in November. #Abaddon is coming to a close…..

Serious investigators dig deeper. Seeking the truth, no matter where it may lead, is our calling. Faction, race, gender, age – none of these things matter here.
